March, brightening
INVESTIGATION
As most of the northern hemisphere moves into spring, we will write about that move, a kind of brightening. Sunrise, lights on, new thoughts, connections, ideas, relationships, joys. We will write about what is bright and beautiful and good in our histories, our futures, and our lives.
The focus this month will be on the metaphor of light and how it can be used to show the reader the world that you’re in. For example, if you describe a sky as filled with stars, it’s very different from describing that same sky as pitch black and cloudless. The natural meaning that we make of a star-filled sky is: twinkling, brightening. The natural meaning we make from a pitch black, cloudless sky is: looming, ominous.
What if something AMAZING happens under an ominous sky. Does that foreshadow something in the future? Or does it make you aware that sometimes, things aren’t what they seem?
What if something HORRIBLE happens under the most beautiful star filled sky or even - bright gold sunrise? What does that do for you, the narrator? What does that do for the scene? What message does that communicate to the reader.
